The mural was completed under a project called ‘Open Spaces’.
Open spaces is a non-profit community project based in Stockport. Their aim being to brighten up and regenerate Stockport High Street, by opening studio spaces, holding workshops & events, and organising large creative projects such as the murals on the empty shops spaces. The theme for the murals set by the the council was ‘remembrance'. After researching on Stockport Archive I discovered the building used to be a Lipton’s Grocers. The artwork is based on the traditional grocers, in the aim of celebrating Stockport Highstreets history. I used Robert Opie’s 1930’s Packaging Scrapbook as reference for the design. It also helped that my Nana and Great Auntie lived through the 1930’s and could recall to me products & brands I should include. This project was shortlisted for the AOI's World Illustration Awards 'site specific' category, in partnership with the Directory of Illustration 2019, and exhibited at Somerset House, London.
